This Learning Exchange will bring together international and national expertise and discussion and debate on the importance of intermediary cities, with a focus on strategic planning and policy support for such cities.  It includes local government associations, local government and urban planning practitioners, politicians, and relevant provincial and national departments actively involved in supporting the development and implementation of urban planning policy initiatives.

2.  South African Participants SALGA and SACN have invited participants from all nine provinces. The invitation has been extended to neighbouring municipalities with prospects of becoming secondary cities. This includes Umsunduzi, Umhlatuze, Kokstad and Newcastle.

  • The Learning Exchange is hosted by His Worship, the Mayor of KwaDukuza.
  • The session will be officially opened by Honourable MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Ms. Nomusa Dube.
  • The Deputy Mayor of eThekwini Cllr. Nomvuzo Shabalala and Co-Chair of the United Cities and Local Government (UCLG) will make an input.
  • The SALGA COO,  Mr. Lance Joel will share the message of support
  • The SACN CEO, Mr. Sithole Mbanga will make a presentation of the findings from their preliminary study on the context of secondary Cities in South Africa.
  • Prof. Josep Llop Torne from the CIMES is the keynote speaker on understanding Intermediary Cities.
  • Mr. Charles Petsika from UCLGA ​and Ms. Sara Hoeflich from UCLG will respond to the debate on Intermediary Cities.
