MILE went green this spring with their recent Municipal Executive Dialogue Series (MEDS) seminar held at the Botanical Gardens. This breakfast session examined the extent to which the municipality is embracing the opportunities presented by the green economy. This was the third MEDS seminar to be hosted by MILE and it saw participants engaging critically in the deliberations.

This seminar was planned in response to the commitment from National government to proactively develop the energy efficiency and renewable energy sectors, to improve employment opportunities and combat poverty.

In an animated presentation, Dr Guy Preston, National Programme Leader of the Natural Resource Management Programmes of DEA, captivated the attention of the managers, challenging them to explore new ways of implementing a green economy. Dr Preston placed emphasis, on the current projects that are taking place to improve poverty and unemployment.

In a short input by Derek Morgan from the eThekwini Energy Office and Aleksandra Brzozowski from the Imagine Durban team, it was clear that Durban has made a good start towards building a solid foundation for the green economy.

“It’s not whether we can afford to do it, it’s whether we can afford not to do it,” said Dr Preston.
