MILE launch a success!
City Manager Dr Michael Sutcliffe, Vice Chancellor of MUT, Professor Mashupye Kgaphola, Mayor, Obed Mlaba, Registrar of UKZN, Professor Jane Meyerowitz and Professor Ahmed Bawa the Vice Chancellor of DUT, signed the Pledge of Academic Collaboration signalling the beginning of academic and municipal excellence.
At least 80 senior representatives from the City and Durban universities attended the prestigious launch of the Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE), held at the Durban City Hall on November 30, 2010.

One of MILE’s key focus areas is collaborating with academia which encourages and supports tertiary institutions to collaborate with each other and the City. The highlight of the event was the signing of a Pledge of Academic Collaboration between the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) and the eThekwini Municipality. The academic institutions will soon be signing a Memorandum of Agreement to affirm their relationship with the Municipality.

Keynote speakers at the signing ceremony included Mayor, Obed Mlaba, City Manager, Dr Michael Sutcliffe, and DUT and MUT Vice-Chancellors, and the Registrar of UKZN.

Professor Ahmed Bawa the Vice Chancellor of DUT was pleased with the existing collaborations DUT has with the Municipality. “This pledge will deepen the relationship between DUT and the Municipality,” said Prof. Bawa.

The Vice Chancellor of MUT, Professor Mashupye Kgaphola emphasised the importance of a partnership between the City and its people and the need to find mechanisms to come together for the betterment of society.
