Sanitation Learning Exchange for Ekurhuleni Municipality
When, Faizal Seedat the Senior Manager of Planning in the Housing Unit was invited to Ekurhuleni  towards the end of last year, the management team was extremely impressed with the great strides made in the field of providing temporary sanitation in informal settlements and the concept of interim services, encompassing a range of basic services including road/footpath access as well as electricity.

In fact they were so inspired that their Metro Housing Unit asked eThekwini whether a learning exchange could be organised. The MILE team supported Metro Housing in organising this two day event held on 30 – 31 March 2011. Mr. David Morema, the Executive Director of Housing at Ekurhuleni engaged Alan Kee, eThekwini’s Project Executive from the Water and Sanitation Unit around the applicability of eThekwini-styled ablution facilities in Ekurhuleni, given the outlying location of their settlements, away from bulk sewer infrastructure.

Interesting deliberations ensued forcing practitioners to think out of the box as they deliver on their mandate of providing dignified solutions to the city’s poor. The learning exchange provided much food for thought for the four senior politicians from the Ekurhuleni Housing Portfolio Committee, who were grappling with the challenge of expediting sanitation services to informal settlement dwellers.

The delegates concluded their exchange with a tour of Redcliffe and Kenville to visit informal settlements that benefitted from eThekwini’s innovative ablution block rollout programme.

A learning note is being prepared by MILE, and will be posted on the website shortly.
