MOA forms a platform for students
As a direct result of the recently signed MOA between eThekwini Municipality and Durban based tertiary institutions, over 80 students affiliated to the Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) Programme, attended an Imagine Durban presentation at the Durban Botanical Gardens on April 01, 2011.

The Breakfast session was hosted by MILE in partnership with the Imagine Durban Programme. The SIFE students present were from the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) and the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).

According to SIFE, it is an international non-profit organisation that works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible leaders.

The purpose of this session was to enhance student capacity in City projects, such as Imagine Durban, whilst providing an opportunity for a “theory –practice” exchange.

An informative presentation was given by eThekwini Municipality’s Imagine Durban senior manager, Bongumusa Zondo about the role students have in the City’s Long Term Plan for Durban. Zondo played a short video depicting the changes that can be made to the City to make it a better place to live. The video addressed issues related to climate change, poverty, health, energy saving among others, it portrayed the important role and responsibility students have in combating these pertinent issues.

After the presentation, students were given an opportunity to share their thoughts on the Long Term Plan and the positive role that students could play that is expected to create major change in the lives of many people living within the City.

“SIFE and Imagine Durban are big, it is time we use our imagination to think big and implement those thoughts. We need to formulate a programme/plan to ensure that students are on par with eThekwini’s Long Term Plan,” said an enthused student.

The SIFE Coordinators and the City plan to meet soon to discuss possible areas of collaboration within the framework of the MOA.
