Following the highly successful MILE Management Seminars held in 2010,  a seminar entitled, “Just how do we create those jobs,” was held at the Durban University of Technology Hotel and Catering Restaurant on May 27th, 2011.

Municipal officials enjoyed a light breakfast whilst discussing the pertinent topic of economic growth and job creation in South Africa and the role that local government practitioners play in assisting national government in facilitating and targeting a method of making more jobs available to grow the economy of South Africa.

The speakers from national government, who were invited to share information pertaining to the new growth plan, were James Theledi, the Senior Economist in Economic Development Department (EDD), Economic Planning and Coordination and his colleague Christian Prins, Director: Economic Planning and Coordination, at EDD.

“There is a need to improve government’s efficiency so that we can deliver faster. We need to encourage young people to work and identify where these jobs are going to come from. We can do this by making sure that we have the necessary infrastructure in place to attract the private sector. Improving and investing in infrastructure will have amazing spin-offs for job creation,” said Theledi.

He spoke about the importance of creating infrastructure in the rural areas, building capacity and enhancing the skills of those who live there so that they can sustain their own livelihoods.

“It is up to local government to see how they can implement a long term strategy to create more jobs. Local government must play the facilitating role for national government,” said Theledi.

After a question and answer session officials were given a chance to share their thoughts and comments.

Nic Combrink a Programme Manager in Strategic Architectural Projects at eThekwini Municipality said, “From what we heard this morning on how government can create jobs, we at a local level can now see how local government can facilitate it. Yes, government is giving good infrastructure and opportunities but we need to facilitate government in building and creating new initiatives and job opportunities.”

A learning note depicting all the learning’s from the recent seminar will be posted soon, so watch this space!
