Inaugural Built Environment Seminar-“Reshaping Cities: What more can be done”?
MILE in partnership with Durban’s tertiary institutions held its first Built Environment Seminar at the Durban Botanical Gardens Conference Centre on June 22, 2011.

The objective of this seminar was to provide a common platform for institutional partners and city practitioners to discuss critical issues of mutual concern.
Durban City Manager, Dr. Michael Sutcliffe officially opened the Seminar, followed by Professor Ivan Turok from the HSRC, who delivered a thought provoking presentation on the challenges and opportunities for spatial planning in South Africa.

The session allowed city practitioners and academics to engage in a full-bodied discussion, on various elements relating to the Built Environment and also facilitated networking between academics and officials.

Academics responded positively towards the seminar and commended MILE on the success. Prof. T. Xaba, UKZN Head of School- Community Development and Social Work expressed that, “The seminar achieved what we had wanted to achieve.”

MILE intends on hosting a series of seminars on issues relating to the built environment.
