What does KM mean for local government?
Knowledge Management is an essential aspect for local government. Its practices must be embedded in all aspects of the organisation in order for it to be retained coherently and shared systematically, a process that is ongoing and well structured. With this in mind eThekwini Municipality hosted the South African Cities Network (SACN) and the Knowledge Management Reference Group (KMRG), meeting over a period of two days. The purpose of the meeting was to develop a framework and a plan to guide KMRG.

During day one the meeting was extended to the MILE Working Group and was centred around presentations on “What does Knowledge Management means for local government.”  These informative presentations were led by Geci Karuri-Sebina an Executive Manager at SACN, who presented from a city development perspective whilst  Seana  Nkhahle the Acting Executive Director: Strategy, Policy and Research at SALGA focused his presentation  on what KM means for local government in general.

The KMRG consists of nine cities in South Africa and secondary towns. On day two, the meeting was limited to KMRG as they engaged in discussions and deliberations on the desired future of KM in municipalities. The next meeting will be hosted by SALGA.
