KZN Municipalities gearing up to go solar!
eThekwini has installed about 17 000 low cost solar water heating units to indigent homes across the municipal area and from this project gained immense knowledge and experience about the challenges involved and possible solutions. Recently, a platform to disseminate that knowledge and experiences was created at the KZN Low Cost Solar Water Heating Workshop.

This endeavour was hosted by eThekwini's Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE) and the Energy Office in conjunction with SALGA, ESKOM, COGTA and the KZN Energy Forum. The workshop targeted KZN municipal practitioners who could possibly be involved in the implementation of a solar water heating (SWH) programme within their respective municipalities.

The aim of the event was to share the lessons learned by eThekwini during the rollout of the low cost solar water heating programme and to showcase examples of good practice, various case studies and ultimately lessons learned that were derived from the project.

Presentations and discussions around the in depth processes that are involved in the SWH project left practitioners well informed about the programme. In addition, a site tour to establish the pros and cons experienced during the installation process, community involvement and political influence, enabled officials to understand the complexities of implementing a low cost solar water heating programme.

Participants appreciated the initiative that eThekwini was showing, and found the free electronic toolkits that were made available by eThekwini to all municipalities most useful.
