MILE charters new waters!
Having predominantly focused on capacity enhancement of municipal officials, MILE launched its inaugural Councillor Seminar Series with its ECOD Committee recently. Councillors, who were hosted by the Port of Durban, were given an opportunity to engage first hand with the Deputy Port Engineer around critical maritime issues facing the City.

Having heard about the strategic role that Southern Africa’s premier gateway port plays in the economy not only of the city and country but in the SADC region, our City’s political leadership engaged in robust discussions about what the port expansion meant for Durban.

The Head of eThekwini Municipality’s Economic Development Unit, Mr Shunnon Tulsiram whose unit coordinated this seminar was upbeat about the city’s future. He elaborated on the need for strategic economic partnerships and introduced Councillors to the work being done by the City’s Maritime Cluster.  From the lecture halls in the Port Academy’s School of Ports in Maydon Wharf, Councillors braved the traffic to the BAT Centre precinct, where they boarded the vessel the ISIPONONO and received in depth commentary of the port and its operations during a working lunch.

Watch this space for future Councillor seminars.
