Strategic Planning for Intermediary Cites in Southern Africa

About 100 practitioners from over eight countries in the global south gathered at Zimbali Hotel Conference Centre yesterday for the first day of the Intermediary Cities Learning Exchange.

The Learning Exchange is an initiative by the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) Urban Strategic Planning Committee in collaboration with the KwaDukuza Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (KZN COGTA), SALGA and the Newcastle Municipality.

The official opening and welcome was done by the Mayor of KwaDukuza, Cllr Ricardo Mthembu. There were also addresses from the UCLG Chair, eThekwini Municipality Deputy Mayor Cllr. Nomvuzo Shabalala and the KZN COGTA MEC, Ms N Dube.

After the morning formalities, practitioners grappled with exactly what the concept of intermediary cities means and its applicability to African cities. They reflected on the key note address of Prof Llop, who is an international expert on intermediary cities, and inputs from the CEO of the South African Cities Network as well as responses from African local government associations.
