eThekwini Municipality and UCLG
Committees and working groups have been established to carry out the work of UCLG.  One of these is the Urban Strategic Planning Committee (USP) of which Durban is the Co-Chair. Our City Manager acts in this role and MILE is the secretariat for USP activities in Southern Africa.
The Urban Strategic Planning Committee and eThekwini Municipality have formed a strong partnership  to promote urban strategic planning and learning in the global south by arranginging learning exchanges and initiating and supporting mentorships between cities.   Cities from Brazil have been closely involved in these activities as well as cities from Malawi, Namibia and Mozambique.
eThekwini is also partnered with Metropolis – the metropolitan section of UCLG – and is currently involved in a Metropolis-funded project with Sao Paulo, Brazil for the upgrading of Welbedacht East. This project will be highlighted at the Metropolis Annual Meeting in Johannesburg, 16 – 19 July 2013, by the Welbedacht task team and there will be special input from our Mayor, Councillor James Nxumalo.
