"Caring Cities" are here!

In anticipation of the opening ceremony tomorrow, where the keynote address will be given by Minister Trevor Manuel, there is a lively atmosphere at the Sandton Hilton where the Metropolis Annual Meeting "Caring Cities" is being held, co-hosted by the City of Johannesburg.

Pertinent issues that will be addressed at this year’s meeting, embracing the theme "Caring Cities" are: rapid urbanisation, food security, resource resilience, safety and security, social cohesion, waste management, greater citizen engagement and funding models for growing cities.

The South African Cities Network session focused on the relationship between the caring city and the African concept of buntu. Lessons from the practice of cities implementing the Safer Cities approach were presented in a session co-hosted by UN-Habitat and Metropolis. Safety in cities and the implications for women and vulnerable groups is also being explored in the Metropolis Women International Network meeting. Other delegates are currently enjoying technical tours to Soweto and the Inner City in downtown Johannesburg to observe the growth that has followed these examples of urban renewal.
Keywords: Metropolis, "Caring Cities"
