The splendid ballroom at the Sandton Hilton has been transformed into rows of seats for the Metropolis delegates representing 78 global cities from 42 countries.

In his Opening and Welcome, Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Parks Tau remarked that this is the first Metropolis annual meeting on the African continent and that it would be a valuable exchange on the issues of urban development.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane announced that Gauteng will be developing an Integrated Urban Development Policy with National Government and establishing a Centre for Urban Initiatives to track the international best practices in Urban Development.
Dr Michael Muller of Metropolis indicated that his organisation was committed to helping build an indivisible world by acting in the present to build the future.
UN Habitat’s Dr Aisa Kirabu Kacyra mentioned that her organisation wants to expand its partnerships to talk about their vision of a world of people living dignified lives in caring cities since resources are insufficient for the urbanisation challenges and we need to learn from one another.
Minister Trevor Manuel gave an overview of urbanisation in South Africa and made some cogent observations on methodologies for reversing current patterns.
He said we must be bold in our approach and pragmatic in aligning the range of local, national, regional and broader plans that exist into credible plans. Bold leadership is needed for this and it offers a deep learning opportunity.
"We need a better methodology for consulting communities: achieve information symmetries." The Minister recommended the Census 2011 app for tablets - My Ward and My Councillor.
The national initiative to improve learning outcomes was highlighted and also the urgent to innovate -experiment with different models.
Minister Manuel concluded with mention of the National Development Plan and said that learning from other citizens, as is occurring presently at the Metropolis Annual Meeting , is vital in the goal of mainstreaming all citizens.
When asked about how the event has been thus far Metropolis Secretary-General, Alain le Saux said, "Good event organisation, high level of discussion and top jazz at the function last night!"
