Cities are Concerned about Climate Change

MILE in partnership with eThekwini Municipality’s Environmental Planning and Climate Protection department hosted members of the International Cities and Counties Management Association at a knowledge sharing session.

The purpose of the session was to explore the possibility of achieving a regionally integrated response to climate change.

eThekwini Municipality is the current secretariat of the Durban Adaptation Charter (DAC). Signed in December 2011, the DAC aims to raise awareness of and encourage local level adaptation to climate change. A key aim is to pursue a regionally integrated adaptation response to climate change. In order to do this, the DAC hosted an USAID-funded ICMA CityLinks knowledge exchange with Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA.

Fort Lauderdale played an important role in the development of a regionally integrated response to climate change in the State of Florida.

The speakers, Jennifer Jurado ,  Director of the Natural Resources Planning & Management Division Broward County, Florida USA and the Assistant City Manager for the City of Fort Lauderdale, Susanne Torriente presentations focused on the impact of sea level rise, challenges of integrated water resource management and policy development.

After an invigorating discussion session, practitioners left the session motivated to make a positive difference.
