Why have Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)?
The creation and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) are essential to ensure the smooth running of an organisation. With this in mind, MILE hosted a brown bag seminar to discuss the development of SOP's.
Mr Pierre du Randt, Capacity Planning Manager from Transnet Port Terminals, the keynote speaker emphasised the importance, challenges and lessons learned with regards to implementing SOP's.
According to du Randt SOP's are documented, with a logical set of instructions on how to conduct a specific task or set of tasks with a definite outcome.

du Randt explained the processes involved in developing and implementing SOPs within an organisation. “SOP's are derived from the organisations vision and mission and can also be used as a training guideline when recruiting new employees. It must refer to supporting documents and a dedicated team must be established with a sole person who writes the actual SOP.”
Participants left the session inspired to contribute to the SOP development process within eThekwini Municipality.
