Global City Climate Planner Certification Workshop
An exploratory Workshop was run recently by the World Bank in Gwanju, South Korea to interrogate the issue of a possible certification system for people involved in climate change mitigation and adaptation planning at the local level.
According to the Deputy Head: Environmental Planning and Climate Protection, Dr Debra Roberts, it was agreed that while it may be possible to advance this idea for mitigation, the adaptation field is still too new for certification to be a realistic possibility.

The Durban Adaptation Charter (DAC) signatories provided a forum to discuss these issues further, and as a result the Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department will continue to work with the World Bank on the certification proposal.

“Good contacts were made with the new manager of the carbon Cities Climate Registry and discussions will be held going forward around the suitability of the registry for DAC reporting. Contacts were also made with The Nature Conservancy and further links will be pursued with TNC staff running the water funds in South America as this approach could be useful for local work being undertaken in the uMgeni Catchment," said Dr Roberts.
