UCLG campaigns for urban Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)

eThekwini Municipality enjoys a rich partnership with UCLG tackling local government challenges, through its co-Chairmanship of the Urban Strategic Planning committee and by means of learning city initiatives conducted by MILE.

Impelled by its mission: To be the united voice and world advocate of democratic local self-government, promoting its values, objectives and interests, through cooperation between local governments, and within the wider international community, UCLG is hosting a Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Leaders (GTF2016) to contribute to the global Post-2015 Agenda (towards Habitat III 2016) in the development of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to replace the MDGs adopted at the UN Millennium Summit in 2000. Specifically, GTF2016 has proposed the development of an urban SDG - a specific goal on sustainable urbanization.
Through the work of the Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department, Durban is one of six cities reviewing key urban indicators that could be used to support a global urban SDG. Dr Debra Roberts, Deputy Head of the Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department, has noted that there is a strong alignment between the goals of the eight plans in eThekwini Municipality’s IDP and the targets that an urban SDG will be trying to meet. She has also emphasized the importance of an urban SDG in highlighting the critical role that cities need to play in meeting global sustainability goals.
To support the development of an urban SDG, UCLG has launched a new website:, which provides key information and resources and indicates the main milestones and messages of the Global Taskforce.
