City-Universities Partnership to Benefit Durban
"We see Durban as the gateway to Africa and we want to leverage your existing city-university collaboration assist us move our research efforts in Africa". Over the last week, this was the message that excited the UKZN-eThekwini delegation who are wrapping up their week long strategic engagements with senior leadership at Duke University, North Carolina, USA.
Hosted by the Associate Vice Provost for Research at Duke University, the intense engagements focussed on the nexus of the environment, energy and health. As an established academic institution which has gained international respect for research and innovation, Duke University reaffirmed its willingness to work alongside Durban and UKZN to build academic capacity, share knowledge and provide resources as part of the Duke Africa Initiative. One of the team members commented that, "It’s refreshing to be immersed in these synergies and contribute to the high quality engagements that could be of benefit to the residents of Durban. As a learning city with an established set of academic stakeholders we must embrace this partnership and position ourselves to strategically tap into the research to policy pipeline."
The team wasted no time in assembling an action plan that will be endorsed in the next few weeks to focus on the identified areas of research.
