Port Cities Dialogue: Towards a Common Vision between Cities and Ports
Guest Speaker, Jamie Simpson: International Advisor on Port Development, shares lessons from world class Port Cities.
The relationship between ports and  cities has evolved over the years. Port Cities play a critical role in urban development and cities are now realizing the economic opportunities that come with being a port city.  The eThekwini Economic Development and Investment Promotion Unit together with the Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE), Economies Regions Learning Network (ERLN) and (TIPS) hosted a seminar to encourage participants to start thinking about the possibilities of maximising the potential and benefits of the Port and the City at large.

The Port Cities dialogue was aimed at exploring a common vision between cities and ports and how the port can be an enabler of business. It also looked at the interface between the Port of Durban and businesses within the eThekwini region. The seminar showcased port efficiency and best practice.

International ports expert, Jamie Simpson, was the keynote speaker at the seminar. Other speakers included Professor Trevor Jones, well-known local ports expert and academic, and Irvindra Naidoo of Transnet.

Challenges identified at the seminar will be tackled in similar forums in the future. Officials left the seminar motivated to make a positive difference in the port and martime sector.
