Developing Integrated and Sustainable Human Settlements
As places where people live and work, human settlements form an important component of socio economic development and advancement.  Local government has been tasked with the role of facilitating and actively participating in housing delivery and the creation of sustainable housing.
Officials from eThekwini Municipality’s Human Settlements Unit recently attended a three-day Strategic Planning Workshop facilitated by the Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE).
The objective of the workshop was to establish the current challenges within the Human Settlements sector and to ensure that there is a unified vision amongst all spheres of government.
Officials from local, provincial and national government attended the workshop with the aim of improving housing throughout South Africa.
Housing expert Mr Johan Minnie was the keynote speaker at the Workshop. During his address Minnie mentioned the need for a paradigm shift in how housing is being approached. He placed much emphasis on innovation – creating “Walkable Cities” and the role housing can play.
The Acting DDG: Human Settlements Planning and Strategy, Mr William Jiyana also presented at the workshop. Jiyana stressed the need to perform and performance as a collective between all spheres of government in the delivery of housing programmes.
Mr  Thabane Zulu the Director-General of Human Settlements was also present at the workshop and encouraged officials to work towards achieving integrated and sustainable Human Settlements.
Participant’s left the workshop motivated to make a positive difference in the rollout of housing programmes.
