Ground Breaking Trend as More City Officials Take up Post Graduate Challenge
In keeping with the vision of being a learning city, the first cohort of about 60 post graduate city officials, mainly masters and doctoral students who are registered with our local universities, were taken through an extensive workshop in preparation for their post graduate journey.
The workshop was conceptualised by Dr Mpilo Ngubane, Head of Skills Development Unit and facilitated by Prof. Urmilla Bob, University Dean of Research at UKZN. With MILE as a strategic support partner, this Post Graduate Research Workshop was intended to provide a platform  for  research support to post graduate students in the city and  contribute to the research targets set by government – with research to policy shifts identified as a key outcome.  As a seasoned academic and internationally respected researcher, the presentations by Prof. Bob provided the balance that cushioned the seriousness and high expectations of being a post graduate student with a lavish buffet of tips and ideas to manage the learning journey. A participant who was overwhelmed with the workshop quipped, “Having participated in this workshop, I am now re-invigorated and armed to better manage my studies. Before this, I was on the verge of quitting my PhD”.
As a follow-up to this inaugural workshop, MILE has been tasked with rolling out a series of needs based mini-workshops  to be held quarterly to support city officials registered for masters and doctoral studies.
