management related challenges.

A seminar focusing on Precinct Management was held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Monday with the aim to find alternative ways to manage the City’s public spaces. A brainstorming session also took place with attendees answering pertinent questions relating to precinct management, structures, resources and priorities.

Linda Mbonambi, Head of Area Based Management said: “One of the City’s major challenges is to find models that improve urban management that will ensure customer satisfaction and an improved quality of life.”

Guest Speaker from National Treasury, Douglas Cohen touched on the grants and funding available for implementation of interventions that will positively guide the Municipality on a sustainable path towards better management of public spaces. Cohen also advised that creativity is key. “The City needs to be innovative in all solutions. There should be a single point of contact who takes responsibility for these challenges.”

One particular success story within the City is the uMhlanga Precinct where there is a sustainable partnership with Urban Management, a company dedicated to developing and implementing solutions to ensure effective management of public spaces. They manage the uMhlanga, Florida Road, Bridge City, Riverhorse Valley and the Cornubia Precincts. Director Brain Wright elaborated: “We need to make sure that Durban is competitive which will result in the increase of the rates base, citizen satisfaction and a better managed public space.”

The way forward included establishing a multi-disciplinary task team, developing a policy framework to guide activities and the identification of key nodes that are in need of precinct management. The group will meet again to conduct further discussions.
