History in the making as eThekwini Municipality fosters academic collaboration
Most successful cities locally and internationally  have mutually beneficial relationships with academic institutions. eThekwini Municipality​ has claimed its space as one of the first local government institutions in SA to  build an effective and strategic partnership  with 6 institutions of higher learning/ research focussed to support its vision as a learning city, enhance  regional  economic development and improve service delivery. 

The first partnership agreement signed in 2011, has reaped numerous mutual benefits linked to each of the areas of collaboration. Overall, it has enhanced research outputs for improved service delivery, contributed to improved skills and experiential learning as well as leveraged knowledge sharing across the institutions. 

Senior city officials and academic leadership spent the morning reflecting on the existing partnership and suggesting new strategic areas to support, re-align and re-position the partnership. Academic partners were unanimous in supporting  a forward thinking ,long term visioning process and asked to be recognised as equal partners in the collaboration. 

In his address the eThekwini Municipality Speaker, Cllr. Logie Naidoo emphasised the importance of having a partnership of this calibre with the institutions. 

“This is history in the making, eThekwini is the first local government entity to partner with local universities. During the past four years our partnership has strengthen. We pledge to work with each other to enhance learning in joint collaboration,” said Cllr. Naidoo.
