Officials rethink Water and Sanitation amidst SA drought
As South African households are adversely hit by water scarcity, the eThekwini Municipality in its effort to solve the current water crisis hosted its first CPD accredited Master Class to equip municipal officials from around South Africa and beyond in the field of Water and Sanitation.

About 60 technical practitioners from South African Municipalities, Local Government Organisations, Provincial and National Departments of Water and Sanitation and a delegation from Paynesville City Corporation (Liberia) attended the course held in partnership with SALGA

The three day Master Class was developed by the eThekwini Water and Sanitation Unit (EWS) to provide participants with knowledge and tools on how to best alleviate water and sanitation challenges in rural and urban areas, showcasing eThekwini’s best practices in the sector .

Each day saw participants tackling informative modules and seeing first-hand the type of infrastructure eThekwini has in place with the EWS department always clinching top awards.

They were taken on site visits to Newlands, Mzinyathi, DEWATS plant and community Gardens, Tongaat Treatment Works and the Tongaat Waste Water Treatment Works to see the various water and sanitation projects executed by the Municipality.

Safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene are all essential elements to preserve human health. Improving these basic services will bring about economic gains while also helping to build a healthy environment for the community.
