Edamame is a prime protein soya bean known for its major health benefits in reducing the likelihood of a range of diseases from breast and prostate cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes, kidney problems, gallstones and high blood pressure.
This programme is a joint initiative between the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, eThekwini Municipality, Edamame Development Programme and The Jobs Fund. It aims to inform decision makers in business, government, civil society and the research community about Edamame’s enormous potential value for public health, agriculture, food security, the environment and the economy, especially the creation of a new industry and associated jobs.
The Keynote Speaker for the event was Dr. Sundar Shanmugasundaram, Former Director General at the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Centre. In his presentation Dr Shanmugasundaram mentioned Southern Africa's need for an Edamame industry.
Participants were treated to a selection of Edamame cuisine during lunch and thereafter embarked on a site visit to the EDP Edamame Farm in Mariannhill.
