Maritime Industry takes the spotlight at 1st Annual Summit

As part of the City’s initiative to position Durban as a Smart Port City, the eThekwini Maritime Cluster (EMC) in partnership with the eThekwini Municipality and the maritime industry stakeholders hosted the 1st Annual Durban Maritime Summit from 24-26 February 2016.

The summit looked at various sectors within the maritime industry that are vital to being a Smart Port City.

In line with the national government’s New Growth Path (NGP) the summit is aimed at enhancing growth, employment and equity. It is underpinned by Operation Phakisa principles, which aims to unlock the economic potential of South Africa’s ocean economy, and EMC’s mission and business strategies to grow Durban’s maritime industry and ensure its global competitiveness.

In her opening address, eThekwini Municipality Cllr. Nomvuza Shabalala mentioned the pertinent role the EMC plays in the sector.

“The Durban Maritime Summit was launched to accelerate economic growth & position Durban as an economic hub for the maritime sector, ensuring the Port of Durban becomes a sustainable gateway of Africa. EMC drives the City's collaboration within the maritime industry and is a good initiative in increasing the country’s revenue,” said Shabalala.

With informative presentations, discussion sessions and site visits the event provided an opportunity for delegates to engage and network.

Some of the highlights of the summit included, Maritime Career Presentations and Career Expo which exposed aspiring learners to the Maritime Sector. It also gave learners a chance to find out more about career choices within the field.
The outcomes and resolutions derived from the summit will be implemented during the 2016 financial year and a report back on achievements will be provided at the 2nd Durban Maritime Summit in 2017.
