Municipal Institute Of LearningMILE - Municipal Institute Of Learning
Placing Knowledge Management (KM) at the core of the Local Government Agenda
KM practitioners from municipalities across South Africa, including the National KM Reference Group (KMRG) gathered at the Moses Mabhida Stadium from 17-19 May 2016, to attend the Knowledge Management Learning Exchange.

The aim of KM Learning Exchange was to facilitate the development of successful and solid implementation of KM programmes within municipalities.

The event was hosted by MILE in partnership with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and South African Cities Network (SACN), the session was officially opened by the Head of the EThekwini Municipal Academy (EMA), Dr Mpilo Ngubane who provided an outline of KM within eThekwini and the pertinent role it plays in local government.

“Knowledge Management can be used to transform and advance governance in municipalities through: reproducing best practices, promoting networking, collaborative approaches and eliminating silo mentality. It is an enabler of municipality efficiency, local government and improved service delivery, “emphasised Dr Ngubane.

The Learning Exchange allowed for KM practitioners to engage and discuss matters pertaining to KM and its development. It created a space to lay a solid foundation for the implementation of highly successful KM programmes in all spheres of government and its agencies.

Participants were impressed by the various presentations done by practitioners in the field of KM. With expert led facilitation and discussion sessions, participants were enlightened by the knowledge gained and shared.

“It was an awesome, refreshing and inspiring Learning Exchange. I am looking forward to go back and implement the best practices that I have learned from the learning event,” said Mafedi Mphahlele, KM Director: Department of Trade and Industry in Pretoria.

As a way forward, participants were encouraged to use the KM networks and best practice showcased during the Learning Exchange to enhance KM within their respective municipalities.
