City to City Learning: Taking forward Sister City Partnerships & Localising SDGs
“Driving away from our airport to our hotel after a 20 hour flight from Durban, I may have been mistaken that I was fast tracking through the inner residential parts of greater Clairwood. My mistake was confirmed when I saw a sign board marked Montego Bay — somewhat resembling Durban's port in some respects, less the commercial activities associated with port cities.”
Led by the Head, Area Based Management Unit, Linda Mbonambi and MILE Collaborating with Academia Programme Manager, Collin Pillay, the Durban delegation responded to an invitation by the Mayor Bertel Moore of Westmoreland Parish Council  for a city to city sharing learning exchange under the broad theme of local sustainable development.
Hosted in Jamaica from 5-10 June 2016, the exchange is a first step towards exploring the potential for formal relations between the two municipalities on local sustainable development with a focus on land use management, urban renewal and regeneration, informal settlements, climate change and social transformation.
The Westmoreland Parish Council is developing a local sustainable development plan for Westmoreland and is examining implementation of various development strategies and early action projects. The Council is also pursuing a strategy of engagement in friendship exchanges with international counterparts to enhance the technical capacity of Parish Council professionals and to obtain technical support to advance various parish projects.
