Informal Economy Summit
The City of Cape Town in partnership with SALGA hosted its fourth Informal Economy Summit from 13 – 14 June 2016 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

EThekwini Municipality’s Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE) was tasked to facilitate the Summit sessions and produce a publication that can be used for future reference. The Summit was part of the City’s regular engagements with the informal economy and micro enterprise to share insights, challenges, experiences and better practices with the intention of strengthening economic growth and development.

The theme of the Summit was: Leadership as a tool to strengthen support and development of the Informal Economy and to encourage collaboration amongst key stakeholders. The concept of leadership included personal, public sector and business leadership. The summit consisted of a number of sessions that included a topic on technology to enhance business opportunities and funding models.
Delegates and stakeholders left the Summit equipped with new approaches to leadership and insights into how they can enhance the engagements of the informal economy and local government officials, as well as enhanced sector collaborations. The overall outcome of the summit was to allow informal traders and micro-enterprises to seize opportunities that exist and to partner with formal businesses to create all-encompassing economic growth.
