IKS BRICS Conference 2016
The first BRICS Countries International Conference on Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) is currently underway the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The theme for the Conference focuses on Sustainable Food Security and Environmental Governance for Climate Change Adaptation and is in line with the local, provincial, national and multilateral imperatives of South Africa’s developmental strategic priorities. 
The conference realizes the significant role played by community-based knowledge systems and institutions in the livelihood of the people in the BRICS member countries.
About 120 delegates attended event jointly organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DST)-National Research Foundation (NRF) Centre in Indigenous Knowledge Systems (CIKS) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), eThekwini Municipality's Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE), National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS), South African BRICS Think Tank (SABTT), Africa Programme of the United Nations (UN) University for Peace (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia), Durban Chamber of Commerce and the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD).
The conference brings together development agencies, organised civic society, business sector, policy makers, traditional leaders and healers from within and outside the BRICS countries to share experiences on these global challenges. The BRICS IKS conference will propose sustainable community-based solutions thereby adding value to the theme of the upcoming 8th BRICS Summit in Goa, India in October 2016 on” Building Responsive, Inclusive and Collective Solutions”.
