uMshwathi Municipality participate in Urban Strategic Planning Workshop
Umshwathi Municipality’s Mayor, Cllr. Mbhele together with her Executive Committee, Councillors, Municipal Manager, Mr Mbaso and his senior management gathered at the Drakensberg Gardens on 24 January 2017 to begin a journey of laying the strategic direction for their municipality.

The intense three day urban strategic planning workshop was facilitated by officials from MILE's Municipal Technical Support Programme and KZN: COGTA.  The purpose of the workshop was to develop a clear understanding as to why a longer term strategic vision is required for city development.

It also provided detailed insights into how a city’s long term vision has been actually implemented – using the case of eThekwini Municipality and a platform to share the concept and practical implications of  joint learning and mentoring support through practitioner to practitioner professional exchange and learning.

The sixty delegates present showed great passion and commitment to the process.  They tirelessly worked long hours to review their vision and develop their seven point strategic action plan.  The draft reviewed vision that they developed will be taken out for stakeholder consultation before it is adopted.  The Drakensberg Gardens 2017 Accord was signed by all the delegates whereby they pledged to honour and uphold the revised DRAFT VISION for  Umshwathi  Municipality and make concerted efforts to implement the SEVEN point ACTION PLAN, within the agreed upon timeframes, by the agreed upon persons, as contained in the strategic action plan.

Mayor, Cllr. Mbhele thanked the facilitators and requested continued collaboration between MILE and  Umshwathi  Municipality.

The Speaker, Cllr. Mdunge emphasised that the knowledge that they had gained over the three days had empowered them to move  Umshwathi Municipality forward from being good to being great.
