eThekwini-Sri Lanka Collaboration: Localising SDG 11 and 16
In the spirit of Localising Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and facilitating city-to-city learning, MILE hosted an Urban Strategic Planning Learning Exchange with a delegation from the Sri Lanka Federation of Local Authorities (FSLGA) from 27th-30th March 2017.

With about 30 technical officials from FSLGA, the Learning Exchange was hosted by MILE in partnership with the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG).

The eThekwini Municipality currently chairs the Urban Strategic Planning and City-to-City Learning Committee of the UCLG. MILE has taken the lead on behalf of the Committee and in partnership with the UCLG’s regions and SALGA to generate discussion and create awareness of the SDGs through Learning Exchanges.

The Learning Exchange covered all aspects of strategic planning, highlighting the importance of long term planning,  community participation and urban planning. It also explored how plans inform the budgeting process and performance monitoring and evaluation that organizations need to adhere to in order to produce an effective strategy that will work well for them.

Delegates spent the last day of the Learning Exchange at the Mariannhill Landfill for a presentation and tour on the Landfill operations. Logan Moodley (DSW Project Executive).

The learning event also provided a platform for officials to engage on challenges and opportunities in the practice and implementation of urban planning.
