Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret
In pursuit of creating awareness and localising Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) MILE hosted a Policy Dialogue focusing on SDG 12. As a Brown Bag session, officials spent this morning viewing the documentary Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret, a ground-breaking environmental documentary which uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today – and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are afraid to talk about it.

SDG 12 target 12.8 states, “By 2030 ensure that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature. "Economic growth and development require the production of goods and services that improve the quality of life. Sustainable growth and development require minimizing the natural resources and toxic materials used, and the waste and pollutants generated, throughout the entire production and consumption process.

Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, water consumption and pollution, is responsible for more greenhouse gases than the transportation industry, and is a primary driver of rainforest destruction, species extinction, habitat loss, topsoil erosion, ocean “dead zones,” and virtually every other environmental ill. Yet it goes on, almost entirely unchallenged.

A shocking 51 percent or more of global greenhouse-gas emissions are caused by animal agriculture, according to a report published by the Worldwatch Institute. According to the United Nations, a global shift toward a vegan diet is necessary to combat the worst effects of climate change.
