Reinforcing African Sanitation Partnerships: Benchmarking
A Learning Session on Reinforcing African Sanitation Partnerships for a delegation from Cameroon, Senegal and Cote d'ivoire is currently underway at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Hosted by eThekwini Municipality’s Water and Sanitation (EWS) Unit the three-day initiative forms part of the African Water Association peer-to-peer learning partnerships program designed specifically for improving the sanitation sector in general, and fecal sludge management in particular.  Through this peer-to-peer mentoring and exchange program, AfWA intends to foster the establishment of strategies for managing fecal sludge and developing on-site sanitation projects in five African cities: Yamoussoukro (Côte d'Ivoire), Yaounde (Cameroon), Bamako (Mali), Lusaka (Zambia) and Kampala (Uganda).
ONAS (Senegal National Office for Sanitation) and eThekwini Municipality in Durban (South Africa) are mentors for French-speaking and English-speaking recipient countries respectively, as they actually developed a good number of initiatives over the past decade in fecal sludge management and have proven experience in the sector.
Day One of the Learning Session featured delegates engaging in a facilitated discussion session based on presentations done by the EThekwini Water and Sanitation Unit.
EWS, Project Executive, Mr Mandla Malakoana provided the background to the EWS philosophy.
“At EWS good is not good enough. It is not all about technology, but we keep abreast and ensure that our staff possess the necessary skills. As we believe that with these skills people can make extraordinary things can happen, said Malakoana.
Delegates will spend the next two days on visits of the various EWS projects within the City.
