Durban Climate Change Strategic Review Workshop
Global average temperatures are increasing from pre-industrial levels with cities experiencing climate change in the form of flash floods and droughts. It is critical that cities take action quickly to limit global average temperature increases to a 1.5 degree goal. With this in mind, the EThekwini Municipality in partnership with C40 Cities and MILE hosted a baseline assessment workshop for City officials, on 9th March 2018.

Created and led by cities, C40 is focused on tackling climate change and driving urban action that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks, while increasing the health, wellbeing and economic opportunities of urban citizens. EThekwini Municipality Mayor, Cllr Zandile Gumede is the C40 vice Chair for Africa and Durban has been positioned as one of the first cities to develop a 1.5 degree action plan.

The aim of the workshop was to share outcomes from an initial strategic review process of climate change accomplishments and gaps in Durban and to attain institutional arrangement and climate change governance structure for the City. Participants also worked conducted a Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats analysis linked to climate change mitigation and adaptation for the city

Mr Musa Mbhele welcomed participants to the workshop and emphasised the importance of dealing with climate change. He mentioned that Durban has a positive and progressive leadership in terms of achieving climate change goals.

“The impact of climate change is already upon us and as a member of C40, Durban is on the international roadmap as far as climate change is concerned, said Mbhele.
