EThekwini Officials 'Go Green'
EThekwini Municipality is not only paying lip service to the concept of going green but is adopting eco-friendly business solutions that will contribute towards a greener and more sustainable planet that will also help to reduce Municipal operating costs.

The City’s Energy Office in collaboration with the Information Systems Unit, is leading by example and has encouraged Municipal Officials to consider video conferencing whenever possible as means of communication, instead of travelling for meetings be it with other eThekwini officials or external stakeholders. The City has invested in state of the-art video conferencing infrastructure which has been installed in numerous municipal buildings.

The next phase of the project will include installing additional infrastructure at the Office of the City Manager, Human Resources and the Municipal Institute of Learning offices.

EThekwini’s Climate Change Manager Itumeleng Masenya said the concept seeks to reduce carbon footprint. “Video conferencing reduces unnecessary travelling. It will save time, money, fuel and reduce carbon emissions associated with travelling thereby saving the environment,” said Masenya. The move will also cut down on the use of paper and plastic. Masenya said video conferencing eliminates the need for printing information in a hard copy format by letting participants share information and fi les digitally. It makes retrieving documents and collaboration more convenient and seamless. “Everyone has a role to play in reducing carbon emissions. I encourage business and other municipal departments to use innovative solutions to address climate change. A major environmental challenge for cities around the world is to develop sustainable transport solutions, with almost one quarter of carbon emissions derived from transportation,” added Masenya.
