Municipal Institute Of LearningMILE - Municipal Institute Of Learning
Municipality’s Aspire to Improve Water and Sanitation
A Learning Exchange on Water Governance was hosted by eThekwini Municipality’s Water and Sanitation Unit in partnership with the German Development Agency- GIZ and MILE from 18-20 September 2018 at the Garden Court Marine Parade.

The event aimed to provide exposure to innovative practices in water governance and provided a space peer to peer learning between two district municipalities from the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal i.e. Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) and Amathole District Municipality (ADM). The Learning Exchange in addition, forms part of the GIZ Governance Support Programme support packages for these municipalities.

The informative Learning Exchange featured presentations by eThekwini Municipality officials on areas such as: Asset Management, Scientific Services, Durban Water Recycling, Revenue Management, Contact Centre Management, HR Management and Non-Revenue Water.

Turning theory into practice participants also went on site visits to the EThekwini Water and Sanitation Call Centre, Community ablution blocks (CABs) and Newlands - Mashu Research Facility, showcasing the innovative projects by EWS and various partners.

With facilitated discussion sessions, the event provided practitioners with tools to help motivate implementation of key lessons learnt during the learning event. It also presented a dynamic, practical and interactive platform for practitioners to engage and learn from EThekwini good practice.

This will be supported by an action plan, developed during the learning journey with eThekwini Municipality that will consider short, medium- and long-term interventions that could be supported by the GIZ Governance Support Programme to improve the governance arrangements in water service delivery in Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) and Amathole District Municipality (ADM).
