MILE Facilitates SALGA Informal Economy Metro Engagement
It is not debatable that the informal sector complements Government initiatives in various ways. The informal sector provides employment and income to millions of people who otherwise would have no other means of survival. The sector has become the breeding ground of entrepreneurship with the families passing on the practical skills from one generation to the other. The ability of the sector to play these important roles invokes the question that: Is the sector garnering enough support from the authorities in the jurisdictions they are operating from?

Building on the previous engagement held in 2017, SALGA Western Cape in partnership with MILE hosted the Informal Economy Metro Engagement that took place on the 25th to the 26th of February 2019 in Cape Town.

In attendance were officials representing various municipalities and government departments. There was also representation from the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI); the University of Cape Town; and Women in the Informal Economy, Globalising and Organising (WIEGO).

As the workshop unfolded, presentations and areas of discussion were based on the Report Back of the 2016-2017 Informal Economy Summit, Recent Data Highlights of the Changing Picture of the Informal Sector, and Key Lessons from Jurisprudence and Constitutional Principles, among other pertinent themes relating to the Informal Economy.

The Engagement concluded with a dynamic session whereby different inputs on various aspects regarding the informal economy were shared.

In his closing remarks, SALGA's Economic Development Director, Mr Charles Parkerson stated that all valuable inputs made throughout the duration of the Engagement will be factored into the draft SALGA Local Government Informal Economy Position Paper.
