City seeks inclusive Green Economy through stakeholder engagement
The EThekwini Energy Office in partnership with MILE hosted a Green Economy Engagement with the City’s green industry stakeholders, today at the Durban ICC.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has defined the green economy as "one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. It is low carbon, resource efficient, and socially inclusive" (UNEP, 2011).

The purpose of the event was to facilitate inputs on how to engage with key City  stakeholders on what support is required from eThekwini Municipality in terms of creating an enabling environment conducive for green economy.

During his address, Shunnon Tulsiram the Head of Economic Development and Investment Promotion for EThekwini Municipality made reference to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals , highlighting the imperative role cities play. “As local government we need to understand our responsibility towards achieving SDGs. During this engagement we hope to achieve the folllowing: to better understand what business needs; insights into challenges; appropriate interventions; a platform to engage further with stakeholders, said Tulsiram.

Councillor Busi Ndlovu reiterated Tulsiram’s remarks mentioning that given the extreme flooding experienced in KZN recently Climate Change is threatening the quality of life of citizens.  She said, “We need to recognise Climate Change when addressing the green economy.”

Stakeholders spent the afternoon in a facilitated discussion and feedback session which provided ideas, suggestions and challenges in terms of reaching a green economy within the City.

The event served as a consultative forum between the City and relevant eThekwini stakeholders in the green industry to determine what the industry requires in order to develop and grow a green economy.
