City Celebrates World Town Planning Day 2019
"World Town Planning Day celebrates the accomplishments of planners and their contributions to their communities. On November 8, planners in more than 30 countries participate in World Town Planning Day activities annually, a practice that began in 1949." In light of these global celebrations,  EThekwini Municipality's Development Planning, Environment & Management hosted a World Town Planning Day Conference on 8th November 2019 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

The event was run in partnership with the Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE), Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs-KZN (Cogta), Durban University of Technology (DUT), University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and the South African Council for Planners (SACPLAN).

The Conference saw about 200 City planners actively participating in the world cafe session dealing with effective planning in the City.

The event brought together Town Planners and Town Planning Academics from all over KwaZulu-Natal, under the theme: “The Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act (SPLUMA) – “A tool for Spatial transformation is it real or imagined."

Facilitated by MILE the conference served as a platform to assess effectiveness of town planning in creating a liveable City and to explore new approaches and best practices of development planning.
