MILE Facilitates the Umzimvubu LED Review Stakeholder Engagement Workshop
The National Department of Cooperative Governance (DCOG) partnered with MILE in facilitating the Umzimvubu Local Economic Development (LED) Review Stakeholder Engagement Workshop. The Political, Municipal officials and stakeholders of Umzimvubu responsible for LED converged at the Sophia Park, Mount Frere from 20th – 21st February 2020 to actively participate in Umzimvubu Local Economic Development review. The overall purpose of the workshop was to allow and encourage local stakeholders to plan towards an inclusive economic development that is innovative driven. 

Umzimvubu​ Mayor Cllr Mnukwa upon welcoming delegates stressed-out the statistics of Umzimvubu employment rate of 26, 4 % as well as unemployment rate of 10, 1% which indicates a huge gap of skilled and non-skilled population. The Mayor also mentioned the Constitution of republic of South Africa, Section 152 (1)(c) which speaks of promoting socio and economic development He added that the workshop was a solid step towards reviewing the LED which will lead to creating job opportunities for the community of Umzimvubu. He concluded his opening remarks by emphasizing the importance of having infrastructure to drive LED forward.

The two-day workshop focused on developing a strategy plan and delegates were afforded an opportunity to discuss and identify the key elements of LED strategy, the successes of the current LED, the gaps or challenges of the current LED, as well as the implementation of the LED strategy.

Towards the end of the workshop, Umzimvubu Municipal Manager Mr Nota suggested assessing institutional arrangements that will enable the municipality to implement the strategy and prioritize the 5-year plan strategy. He also said that the multi-stakeholder forum should sign a MOU in terms of  engagements and have an annual review on the progress of the strategy.
