Webinar: Sustainable Planning and Management of Cemeteries and Crematoria
Current status within KwaZulu-Natal municipalities is indicative of shortage of land for burial purposes; the urgency on this realization, as fuelled by the current COVID-19 pandemic is requiring urgent and immediate response for Municipalities to have contingency plans and processes in place. Against this backdrop, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs (KZN COGTA) in collaboration with MILE hosted a webinar on the Sustainable Planning and Management of Cemeteries and Crematoria.

The Webinar explored the need for long term planning, backed by well-informed strategies and guidelines to better plan and manage existing and future designated burial areas, cemeteries, crematoria and alternative disposition facilities.

It stimulated a discussion around cemetery planning and management, where participants were able to share experiences and challenges; identify required shifts in practices and/ or policy; explore possibilities and innovations and identify cross-sectorial requirements and synergistic partnerships.
