The 6th National Municipal Managers Forum will be hosted by eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality at the Moses Mabhida Stadium from 22 to 23 August 2013. This follows the 5th National Municipal Managers Forum hosted by Bojanala District Municipality in Rustenburg on 29-30 April 2013.  The National MM Forum continues to enhance the interface between SALGA and Municipal Managers in ensuring that their collective voices are heard in the policy and legislative processes. The forum provides an opportunity to collectively reflect and address issues affecting Municipal Managers. It is also a platform for sharing experiences and lessons learnt towards overcoming the myriad of challenges that Municipal Managers must address on a daily basis.

The 6th National Municipal Managers Forum happens at time when South Africa is preparing to celebrate 20 Years of democracy and the Local Government sector is expected to reflect on its own journey post 1994; highlight significant achievements and challenges as well as improvements to promote stability, efficiency and effectiveness of the sector.  Part of this reflection includes the role of Municipal Managers in that journey, the opportunities and challenges that they have faced through that period and how best these can be addressed.

One of the persistent challenges faced by Municipalities is the Municipal Finance as highlighted in a number of reports such as the LGTAS, the SALGA Strategic Agenda, SACN State of City Finances, National Treasury and Auditor General Audit outcomes reports etc.  It remains an important area of discussion for the MMs to collectively guide and support all efforts to improve finances of Municipalities.  The 6th National Municipal Managers Forum will therefore continue to engage on issues affecting the sector and Municipal Managers in particular.

The objectives of the 6th National Municipal Managers Forum are therefore to:

1. To reflect collectively on progress made as local government and prioritise areas for future concerted action;

2. To reflect on strategic challenges facing Municipal Managers and interventions that the Municipal Managers’ Forum can facilitate together with key stakeholders;

3. To reflect on municipal financial sustainability and efforts to build more financially viable municipalities;

4. To reflect collectively on the development of the Integrated Urban Development Framework (IUDF);

5. To facilitate peer learning on the area of Innovation & Learning & Best Practices.
